The recent arrival of a spate of new retailers such as Topshop, Topman, Mountain Warehouse and planned for October, TK Maxx in the High Street is having a significant effect in driving footfall to the town and, refreshingly, making it something of a destination for fashion shoppers.

Secondary areas, such as the Upper and Lower Richmond Roads, have also enjoyed a number of new openings, including a major new showroom for Kitchen Architecture and Bulthaup in the Lower Richmond Road, and in the Upper Richmond Road a new Sainsbury's Local and retention of the newly refitted Allied carpets store, as one of the 50+ branches bought back from administrators by a former director (out of 300+ branches).
