High tides take BMW from Embankment to Barn Elms Boat House
A BMW parked on the slipway was seen floating away pulled by the high tides on Putney Embankment yesterday (9 March).
The police were at the scene but were unable to stop the car being 'taken.
This Thursday morning, joggers, rowers and dog walkers discovered that the car had been deposited beside Barn Elms Boat House.
Unusually high tides are expected to continue until 14 March returning again later in the month.
The car has been tied to the riverbank in an attempt to keep it there until the owner can arrange its removal - no cheap enterprise and with the Schools Head of the River race on 17th they will need to get on with it.
A local resident told this web site,"The signs along the riverbank should be larger warning drivers of the risk - there is so much street furniture that people who aren't local just don't realise this thing can happen. It's more common than many people think - there's even a facebook page dedicated to such events!"
Warning: High tides are expected to continue until 14th March and return again
22nd -27th March.
