Resident plans plaque for in memory of the WW1 fallen
Jerusalem War Cemetery resting place for Private Marels of 65 Mexfield Rd SW15
Because of its 343 First World War dead, there are fields all over the world which will be forever Putney. Two weeks ago the Putney Society published detailed information in its book, "Putney Remembers The Men Of The First World War."
Hugh Thompson who has lived over the last 42 years in Mexfield, Dryburgh and now Festing Roads learnt the names of the fallen ten who had once lived in those roads, of which four were Festing Road residents. He included them in his blog - Remembrance Thursday/itwonthurt.
One was, machine gunner, Clifford Marels who once lived at 65 Mexfield Road and is now buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery. Aged 21 killed no doubt as Allenby liberated Jerusalem from the Turks. One of Hugh's friends recently visited the city and took the picture.
Hugh now says: "This all so moving and as memorials represent a link (sometimes controversially) between the past, present and future I am planning of placing a stone in Festing Road to remember its four sons who fell 1914-18."
