St George & St Mary's transfer wall ownership

St George the developer of Putney Wharf has transferred the ownership of a wall, on the edge of its landmark Putney Wharf scheme, to St Mary's Church at Putney Bridge in SW15. This handover will enable the local church to build a new community centre on the site of the current church hall right in the heart of Putney.

The Reverend Giles Fraser from St Mary's Church remarked: " The handover of the wall from St George will enable us to develop a state-of- the- art complex that is able to meet the demands and multifunctional needs of local groups." The wall will now be demolished to make way for the new community centre, which will include a library dedicated to Putney Debates, meeting facilities, event area for concerts and more space for the church's congregation.

The exchange of ownership of the wall was negotiated in 2002 as part of an agreement package that will provide a route across the Churchyard and enable the continuation of the public riverside walkway up to Putney Bridge. The first stage of the walkway has already been constructed by St George as part of their Putney Wharf development, completing one of the original visions of Wandsworth Borough Council for the redevelopment of this area.

Stephen Embrey, St George South London's Managing Director (seen left with the Rev Giles Fraser) commented: "St George appreciates the good work that St Mary's Church does for Putney residents. By handing over this wall, St George acknowledges the positive impact that these new facilities will have on the area and is happy to support their good work."
