Passengers had to walk back to Putney Bridge Station
It is estimated that tens of thousands of commuters suffered major disruption on the District tube line in the evening rush hour on Monday.
Passengers were stranded on their way home last night when the District line was suspended between Edgware Road and Wimbledon stations, within 24 hours from Mayor Boris Johnson's promise to "fix" the Tube in time for the 2012 Olympics.
The disruption was caused by a track-side fire involving Network Rail cables near Putney Bridge station compounded by a signal failure at Parsons Green. The passengers had to walk along the track to safety at Putney Bridge the operation lasted 80 minutes.
