Council is proposing changes to the area near Putney Bridge

There is only a short time left for Putney residents to have their say about the council’s proposed changes to an area by Putney Embankment know as Waterman’s Green.

The plan is to create a small park by the river in the area currently occupied by the works to construct the Tideway tunnel and the consultation exercise finishes on 25 September.

Improved lighting and access are promised with the replacement of the steps currently used to access the area with a ramp. Although some trees may need to be removed, the council say they will be relocated or replace and the large London Plane at the centre of the site will be retained. There will be new planting and shrubs and the council is investigating placing a living green roof on the Tideway kiosk.

The aim of the scheme would be to encourage more footfall between Putney High Street and Putney Embankment. The proposals fit within wider schemes for Lower Richmond Road, Tideway legacy, and current applications for Putney Pier.

The council’s transport spokesperson Cllr Clare Fraser said: “Waterman’s Green has been closed off to local people for some time because of the Tideway works. We want to take the opportunity to make sure that when it reopens it is a much greener, more usable space for all to use.

“We are committed to improving Putney’s air quality, creating better pedestrian links between Putney High Street and the riverside area and making the area safer for pedestrians and those who cycle by improving the junction of the Lower Richmond Road and Putney High Street.

“We want to incorporate the views of local people into our final plans, so I would encourage residents, businesses and people who work in Putney or travel through it to share their thoughts.”

The consultation runs until 25 September and you can submit your views online. Paper surveys will also be available to collect from St Mary’s Church and Putney Library throughout the engagement period.
