Four 'Boris Bike' Docking Stations Applications In Putney

Part of thirty applications by TfL for Wandsworth

Transport for London (TfL) has now submitted thirty planning applications for Barclays Cycle Hire docking station sites in Wandsworth, four of which are in the SW15 area - none west of the High Street.

Last year the council agreed a plan with the Mayor of London which would see the existing Barclays Cycle Hire zone extended across parts of Battersea, Wandsworth Town and Putney from late 2013.

Bringing the popular bike sharing scheme to the borough is a central aim of the council's Travel Choices campaign and will give thousands of local people a new and exciting travel option.

In total around 60 docking stations would need to be installed across this northern stretch of the borough as part of the extension.

In identifying potential sites, issues considered included safety and the impacts on parking, pedestrians, local businesses and nearby homes.

Planning permission from the council is required for every site and each of TfL’s applications will be carefully assessed before a decision is made.

So far 30 applications have been received and fully validated. More are expected over the coming weeks. To view the application documents visit the council's planning pages and search for the application reference number from the table below.

Wandsworth Council’s transport spokesman Cllr Russell King said:
“There’s been a huge level of interest in the expansion plan since it was first announced last year. The scheme is great way to normalise cycling and will help ease the pressure on our roads, buses, Tubes and trains. The council's ultimate aim is for Barclays Cycle Hire to be extended right the way across Wandsworth. We want this extension to be the first step towards borough-wide coverage”.

As more applications are received they will be listed on the council’s website at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/cyclehire

Potential Docking Station Sites:

Oakhill Road 2012/5953 January 31st, 2013 App received, consultation underway
Oxford Road 2012/5952 January 31st, 2013 App received, consultation underway
Bective Road 2012/5950 January 31st, 2013 App received, consultation underway
Putney Bridge Road 2012/5960 February 7th, 2013 App received, consultation underway

Docking stations are 2m wide and at least 23m long so each site must be large enough to accommodate the equipment. Stations on the footway require an additional 2m clearance to ensure pedestrians can pass.

Where parking bays or yellow lines would need to be changed to accommodate the docking station a traffic management order amendment would be necessary. This process would be subject to a separate consultation exercise giving residents the opportunity to comment on the proposed changes.

The majority of the costs will be met by Transport for London and the scheme's sponsor Barclays. Wandsworth Council will make a contribution of £2mn towards the cost of the roll-out using grant funding provided by TfL. This money is given to the council on the condition it is used for transport improvement projects and cannot be spent on other local services.
