Eight statues along the river from Alan Thornhill
A new Putney sculpture trail will run from Leader’s Gardens in the west to the new Riverside Quarter development next to Wandsworth Park.
The planning applications committee on February 8th February agreed eight sites for the works which are being donated by a nationally recognised sculptor.
The locations and the name of the work proposed are:
Leaders Gardens: ‘Exodus’
Star and Garter Mansions: ‘Horizontal Ambiguity’.
Corner of Putney Bridge Road and Putney High Street: ‘The Turning Point’.
Riverside Quarter: ‘Fall’.
Wandsworth Park: ‘Pygmalion’ and ‘Nexus’.
Putney Wharf: ‘Punch and Judy’ and ‘Motherfigure’.
Deputy planning applications chairman Piers McCausland said:
“The sculptor, Alan Thornhill, is known for his robust and distinctive style. His work ‘Load’ has stood on Putney Embankment outside what is now Thai Square for 19 years. I am sure each piece will give rise to a variety of different opinions. The settings will ensure that this unique display of public art can be easily seen by the public and bring added interest to their surroundings.
Alan Thornhill, now 84, has lived in the area for many years and still retains studios locally. He has offered the community eight nearly life-size figurative pieces of sculpture.
