Maths Prize for Putney School Student

One of best out of 70,000 international competition entrants

Isobel Stuart-Smith from Hurlingham School in Putney has been presented with a silver medal by the Mathematical Association in this year’s Primary Mathematics Challenge.

The prestigious honour demonstrates her achievement as one of the best of the 70,000 young mathematicians in the competition, which attracts entrants from across the UK as well as other countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

The first stage of the challenge took place in November 2012 when, alongside all the other children at Hurlingham, Isobel took the first round of the Challenge.

She was one of the six gold award winners in the school and Jonathan Brough, Headmaster, was delighted to learn that her answers placed her in the top 2% which meant she qualified to take the Bonus Round.

Isobel’s score of 92% on the extremely challenging second paper meant she richly deserved her silver medal. Speaking of Isobel’s success, Mr Brough said, “Here at Hurlingham, we are all extremely proud that Isobel has won a silver award. It is such an achievement to receive recognition for mathematical proficiency on an international scale.”

Lesley Jones from The Mathematical Association added, “We would like to offer our congratulations to Isobel and all of the pupils who participated. We received a large number of entries which reflects a real appetite for solving maths problems and puzzles. We always try to make the questions interesting and accessible, while giving pupils an opportunity to apply fundamental maths skills. It is great to be able to acknowledge brilliant young minds in the UK and nurture future mathematicians.”
