Undermining the reputation of its species for cunning, a fox in Putney had to be rescued after getting hits head stuck in a brick wall.
The owners of a house on Disraeli Road were stunned to find that it had managed to wedge itself into a gap in the wall between two basement floor courtyards on 25 November.
They spotted that he also had a wound on his back, and called the RSPCA for help.
RSPCA Inspector Jade Guthrie was able to free the fox by gently guiding his head out of the gap, and due to his condition, transported him to a local wildlife hospital for further treatment.
Jade said, “The poor fox was in a bit of a sorry state, he was struggling with mange and I could see a wound on his back. I imagine he fell into the basement courtyard and was unable to climb out, so poked his head into the gap in the wall looking for somewhere to hide, but found he was unable to get out.
“I took him to the fantastic team at Wildlife Aid in Surrey, who are very experienced in rehabilitating wild animals, so hopefully the fox will make a good recovery and can be released back into the wild. We're grateful to them, and the public for sounding the alarm - it's a great example of what we can achieve together for animal welfare.”
Anyone who is concerned for the welfare of an animal or who sees an animal in distress should visit the RSPCA’s website for advice about what to do next.
She added, “I’m so grateful to the people who took the time to report the fox to us because they were worried about him. It's heartening to know that people really care about our wildlife.”
The RSPCA has launched its Join The Christmas Rescue campaign and is calling on the public to support the initiative to ensure rescuers can continue their life-saving work during the busy winter period.
