one of the aims of the group is "enabling the less-advantaged in our communities"
Segun Sokoya (right), elected President of the Rotary Club of Putney for the new Rotary year (2007/08), welcomes his new team at his inauguration on 2nd July.
They are, left to right: Di King, (newly elected Club Secretary), Jonathan Nish and Chris Wyatt (respectively Vice-President and President-Elect of the club). Chris will succeed Segun in 2008, followed by South African-born Jonathan, who is also the club's liaison officer with the new Putney Rotaract Club. Segun succeeds Iranian-born Robert Ghazi, President for 2006/7. Segun, who has an accountancy practice in Wandsworth and has lived in Putney for over ten years, is Nigerian-born.
He told Club members present: "Our theme will be education, education and youth. This will
mean enabling the less-advantaged in our communities, improving communications with our host communities in Putney and globally, serving these communities and acting as catalyst for good change wherever possible”.
Among the Club’s regular community initiatives is encouraging participation in such Rotary contests as Youth Speaks, Youth Technology Challenge and Young Chefs. These contests are open to pupils in any of the local secondary schools and will take place during the spring term of 2008.
As part of a global network of Clubs of professionals and business people (www.rotary.org), the Rotary Club of Putney is well placed to act as catalyst for positive engagement of youth in the community. More information about its activities can be obtained at www.putneyrotary.org.uk. It is an active member of over 73 clubs operating in the London area alone. (www.rotaryinlondon.org)
