As eight week consultation period for residents starts
The regeneration of the Alton area in Roehampton has moved another step closer after Wandsworth councillors unanimously backed new planning guidance at last week’s full meeting of the council.

The Roehampton Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), which was voted through by all political parties, provides strong guidance for residents, stakeholders and developers on the level and type of development the council wants to see in this part of the borough.
It sets out eight ‘core principles’ to guide regeneration, including building high quality housing, improving infrastructure, delivering a high quality landscape and improving access and connections. It also includes planning guidance for four ‘sub-areas’ to help shape the development of these spaces in more detail.

The SPD is based on the Alton Area Masterplan, which has been developed over the last two years in close consultation with local residents, businesses, community organisations and landowners.
Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said:
“This is an important moment for Roehampton. It means our ambitions to improve this housing estate are now enshrined in official planning guidance and we can move ahead with selecting a development partner to help us carry out these vital improvements.
“In the years ahead we aim to replace the most outdated housing on the Alton estate with high quality homes set around a much improved environment, a stronger local economy and with modern community facilities. Crucially, we are offering all existing council tenants and homeowners living here the chance to stay and share in the area’s revival.
“Over the course of this project we also expect to build hundreds of additional properties, including more homes for social rent and shared ownership.”
