Thames Water roadworks on north side of bridge causing delays
Traffic on Putney Bridge on Tuesday afternoon
October 24, 2023
There have been significant delays on roads in the centre of Putney this week and disruption is expected to last until Sunday evening (29 October).
The main cause of the congestion is lane closures due to work being done by Thames Water on the north side of Putney Bridge. This has required temporary traffic lights to be set up one the A219 Putney Bridge Approach.
Traffic is queueing in both directions at busier times and there is a knock on effect to the Upper Richmond Road and Putney Bridge Road and there have severe delays to traffic crossing Wandsworth Bridge.
Buses serving Putney are being curtailed with routes 14 and 74 stopping at Putney Bridge Station and routes 39, 85 and 93 terminating at Putney Heath, Green Man, route 265 is stopping at Barnes Station and route 270 at Wandsworth Police station with the 378 and 485 stopping at Commondale. For all routes an hourly service is completing the full route.
There are also potential delays on the A3 and A308 due to a burst sewer on Derwent Avenue (SW15 3RD). Thames Water is on site and has closed the nearby sewage pumping station while it carries out the repair. To ensure customers can continue to use their facilities, the water company says it is using tankers around the clock to remove sewage from the site and reduce impact on the environment.
