New Zebra Crossings Approved Near Local Schools

Two local schools are to benefit from new road safety measures after councillors approved plans at a recent meeting.
Zebra crossings are to be installed on Putney Bridge Road near Hurlingham School and Alton Road in Roehampton near Heathmere School following a vote at the borough Transport Committee on Monday (19 February).
The Putney Bridge Road crossing will be sited near the junction with Wadham Road. The existing mini-roundabout adjacent to this location is to be removed with the aim of improving safety and visibility on the approach to the crossing.
The Heathmere School crossing would be installed near Alton Road’s junction with Hyacinth Road.
Cabinet Member for Transport Jenny Yates said, “Making walking and cycling routes to and from schools safer for children and parents is a key priority for the council as part of our Future Streets strategy.
“We want to encourage more families on the school run to switch from using their cars to walking or cycling instead and making our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists is central to that strategy.
“Having listened to parents and teachers and the wider community in and around these schools, we are now proposing zebra crossings close to the school gates.”
