Local GP Sara Morgansteil told PutneySW15:
"Regenerate-RISE is fundraising to build a 10 bed 'Re-ablement' unit to enable older people to rehabilitate, after staying in hospital, before being able to return home. We are hoping to build this above the Platt Christian Centre in Putney and it will be a modern intermediate care centre, dedicated to supporting older people to be able to live in the community. Our programme will include the befriending by volunteers who will continue visiting after discharge. The Centre will be staffed by qualified professionals giving 24 hour care and we will be using physiotherapists, occupational therapists and have regular input by local GPs. It is our aim to provide beds for patients from Kingston Hospital, St George' Hospital, Charring X Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital as well as being available to Wandsworth Adult Social Services.
To date we have either raised or had pledged £760k; we project that the cost of completing the whole project will be about £1.1 million, so we are getting closer. We would welcome any donations, regular or one off, as well as anyone who would like to volunteer to help us realise this vision."
Regenerate-RISE as we know it today is the result of RISE (Reaching the ISolated Elderly) a project initiated by REGENERATE.com in 2001 following a participatory needs assessment of the Roehampton area by the Wandsworth Primary Care Trust. REGENERATE.com was started in January 2000 by Mo Smith and her son Andy Smith when they identified the need for a Lunch Club in the heart of the Alton Estate - the second most deprived area in the borough of Wandsworth.
From those small beginnings sprang RISE in Roehampton. Following the closure of the Robert Joy Day Centre in Putney, a second RISE was opened to reach the isolated elderly in Putney from the Platt Christian Centre in Felsham Road, Putney and is funded by Wandsworth Borough Council.
Regenerate-RISE is currently working from the Platt Christian Centre in Putney with an outreach work into both Putney Vale and Roehampton.
