Putney and Roehampton Mark the Queen's Passing
A bell at St. Mary's tolls 96 times for each year of her life

The tenor bell at St. Mary’s Church in Putney will toll 96 times at midday on Friday (9 September) to mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second.
This bell is the heaviest and deepest sounding in keeping with the solemn tone of the occasion. The church’s bells will be rung fully muffled from 6pm.
There is a book of condolence in the church in which you can write a message. The church will be open during Putney Pantry Cafe opening hours (10am - 4pm weekdays, 9.30am - 5pm Saturdays, 11am - 5pm Sunday).
One Sunday the church will still hold its 10am Patronal Festival service and Backpack Blessing with Bishop Tim, and Sunday School resumes but there will be no refreshments, BBQ or bouncy castle as originally planned afterwards. The 6pm service will now revert to a contemplative format with silence and thanksgiving for the life of The Queen.
It is anticipated that the main act of remembrance and thanksgiving will be next Sunday at 10am (18 September).
All Saints' Church on Putney Common is being available for those who wish to visit over the next few days. Morning Prayer will take place as usual on Friday at 9.15am, and then it is hoped to keep the church open until a Sung Eucharist at 7.30pm, which will be an opportunity to mark Queen Elizabeth's death and pray for her and her family. A condolence book will be available for signing, and you will be welcome to light candles.
On Sunday usual services will take place at 8.30am and 10.30am, at which prayers will be said for Queen Elizabeth and the new King.
Other churches across Putney and Roehampton are throwing open their doors to allow people to make acts of quiet remembrance.
Fleur Anderson MP for Putney said, “Rest in peace your Majesty. Our Queen served our country and all the nations of the Commonwealth with love and dedication. This is a deeply sad period of both mourning and gratitude.
“The Queen brought our nation together, celebrated with us, grieved with us, thanked unsung community heroes, led and shared her faith with the world. She gave us continuity and stability. Throughout her 70 years of service, the Queen set a shining example of selfless duty, integrity and respect for others.
“I join with everyone in Putney in sharing my deepest respects and thanks. My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family.”
The Roehampton Garden Society has cancelled an event it was planning to hold this Saturday (10 September).
