Fleur Anderson campaigning outside East Putney station
October 3, 2025
Hopes have been raised that East Putney station could finally become more accessible, as Transport for London (TfL) confirms it will carry out a full feasibility study into installing lifts at the District Line stop. The move follows years of campaigning by Putney residents, disability advocates, and local representatives.
Putney MP Fleur Anderson, who launched a petition with Councillor Finna Ayres in 2023, welcomed the announcement. “This is fantastic news for our community,” she said. “Over 3,000 people signed our petition because they know how essential this is for parents with buggies, older residents, people with disabilities and people with luggage.”
Leonie Cooper, London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth, added, "The petition showed the huge appetite and support for step-free access from residents across Putney. "
East Putney currently has two steep staircases and no lift access, making it one of the more challenging stations for those with mobility needs. TfL’s feasibility study will assess the technical and financial viability of installing lifts, but no final decision has been made. Crucially, East Putney is not on the list of stations where step-free upgrades are being ruled out which was announced at the same time.
TfL says the study will begin later this year, alongside similar assessments at 16 other stations across London. Any future works would depend on available funding and prioritisation.

East Putney was already assessed in a feasibility study completed in 2019, which examined lift locations, construction methods, and environmental implications. That earlier study placed the station on a longlist of 30 candidates, but progress stalled due to funding constraints. A June 2025 FOI investigation revealed that many stations on the list—including East Putney—had been in limbo for years.
