Traffic Cameras Issue Over £1.5mn Fines in Putney

Four of the top five revenue raising locations on High Street

Newly released data shows that four of the top five locations of PCNs issued by Wandsworth Council are on Putney High Street. Over £1.6 million in fines have been issued by CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras on the road since the beginning of 2016.

The figures, which come from a Freedom of Information request made by the Wandsworth Times show that £3,140,475 worth of fines have been handed out in the borough in this period.

In an attempt to reduce pollution and congestion on the High Street the council introduced a ban on daytime deliveries to stop vans, lorries and HGVs stopping on Putney High Street from 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday. The High Street is monitored by automatic number plate recognition cameras. It is not known what proportion of the fines relate to this sort of offence.

A spokesman for Wandsworth Council said, “The fines imposed in these case are for drivers who have driven dangerously or caused obstructions for other road users.

"They include driving the wrong way down one way streets, illegal right and left turns and blocking box junctions.

"By law all the revenue raised must be spent on transport related services such as repairing potholes, funding free bus passes and taxicards for pensioners and disabled people and also on the costs of transporting vulnerable and disabled children with special educational needs to and from school.”

We have asked the council for further comment on why such a high proportion of the fines are in Putney.
