Under 13s team triumphs in qualifying competition
The winning table tennis team from Putney High school
The under 13s team representing Putney High School has won the qualifying tournament for the Jack Petchey Schools Team Table Tennis Championships.
More than 130 players took part in the central London qualifying tournament at the Greenhouse Centre in Marylebone, competing in boys’ and girls’ competitions at under-11, under-13, under-16 and under-19 age groups.
Putney High School came out on top in the U13 girls’ category. The Putney squad of Isabella Turner-Samuels, Nathalie Endemann, Uma Guruparan (all 12) and 11-year-olds Skye Laing and Dai-An Nguyen-Luu defeated Broomfield School, Enfield, in the final.
The school’s Director of Sport Emma Fraser said: “It’s a new sport for us at Putney. I was aware we had some table tennis players in Year 7 who played in our Junior School, so we got the tables in and started to play and that’s how we ended up in this competition.
“The girls were just brilliant, a great performance, and we’re looking forward to seeing how far they can go.”
The winners go through to the finals of the Jack Petchey Schools Team Championships on Saturday January 8, where they will face the teams which qualified from four other London regions and Essex to decide the overall champions.
The Jack Petchey Schools Table Tennis Championships is a partnership between the Jack Petchey Foundation and Table Tennis England to get more young people playing the sport at school for fun and also to compete. It comprises individual and team competitions which are open to boys and girls in full-time education in London and Essex. The partnership also includes the donation of indoor and outdoor table tennis tables to schools and youth clubs in London and Essex.
