Shoppers in Putney wishing to make a brief stop for a quick purchase now can do so thanks to lobbying by local councillors.
Transport for London (TFL) have been prevailed upon to relax the restrictions in two loading bays outside shops on the Upper Richmond Road.
Previous the rules prevented any vehicle stopping outside 199 to 203 Upper Richmond Road - close to its junction with Ravenna Road and outside 282 to 292 Upper Richmond Road, which is roughly midway between the high street and Charlwood Road.
Any vehicle was prohibited from stopping there between 7am to 7pm – except for loading between 10am and 4pm. While this allowed shops to receive deliveries it was felt this discouraged passing trade.
But from Monday, 1 March the rules will be relaxed to allow vehicles to park in these bays for 20 minutes between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

Transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said, “This is great news for the businesses along this stretch of the south circular who will now be able to benefit more from passing trade. It will no doubt prove an important and welcome lifeline for the shops and businesses here as we begin to move out of lockdown.
“I’m delighted that we were able to successfully make the case for these changes and that our appeal to TfL has been positively received.”
Drivers taking advantage of the 20-minute window will not be permitted to return for 40 minutes. The change is being made under an Experimental Variation Traffic Order.
