Customers of the Nationwide branch on Putney High Street have received letters informing them that it is to close on Thursday 30 September.

The society says that it is costing more money to run the branch than it returns and they have to act for the benefit of every member.

In an impact statement published by Nationwide to explain the decision a 23.6% fall in in bank transaction between March 2015 and March 2020 is cited.

The society also say that only 16% use the branch exclusively and 74% of customers are registered for online banking.

Last year Nationwide made a commitment to keep at least one branch open in every town or city until at least January 2023 but it appears that, for the purposes of that pledge, it is interpreting it as referring to London as a city rather than Putney as a town. It says there are five branches within a 2.7 mile radius that customers can use.

The society will still have branches in the Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth was well as on Fulham Road in Fulham which is 1.4 miles away from the existing branch.

Customers will still be able to withdraw cash from the Barclays ATM at 60 Putney High Street and can perform banking transactions at the Post Office at 197 Upper Richmond Road.

If you want to speak to someone about this branch closure you can contact Nationwide’s Regional Director Heather Hazley at Heather.HazleyOffice@nationwide.co.uk or call 0345 266 0258.
