Bronze award at Chelsea for Putney garden designer

Juliet McKelvey from Putney and business partner Judith Wise were awarded a bronze for their Walled Garden.

A hot, exotic garden with a Mediterranean influence. A Moroccan-style courtyard is enclosed with white, rendered walls, which provided a backdrop for the dramatic planting scheme in shades of black, purple, dark red and pink.

(see artists sketch)

There were six clear-stemmed olive trees which flank the boundary walls of the garden and two formal parterres, enclosed with clipped santolina hedging. The parterres were planted with scented herbs, although the plants in the rest of the garden were mostly bulbs such as alliums, tulips, narcissus, lillies and fritillaries.

A stream flowed from a steel sculpture into a rectangular pool and there was a second prominent sculpture, also made from galvanised steel. They were surrounded by paving made from an Italian lava stone - 'balsatina' - a first at Chelsea.

In 2001 they were awarded a Silver Gilt for their garden - the first time they had entered the event.
