Maker Club for Young People to Be Set Up in Putney

Plans are being made to set up a ‘maker club’ in Putney to introduce teenagers and young adults to coding
The club was originally due to be set up last month by Covid-19 disrupted the arrangements. The club would operate initially in the undercroft at St Mary’s Church where the newly established Repair Café is based with the intention of finding a more permanent base if interest is strong.
Organiser Greg Brougham says, “We are looking at helping kids get started with Raspberry Pis or microcontrollers and ensuring that they have the support they need to make something of interest to themselves”
The Raspberry Pi is a cheap single-board computer that was introduced in 2012 and it has become very popular over the last decade. It offers everything that a standard laptop or desktop has, other than the display, keyboard, and power supply. This cheap board provides an ideal way to introduce children to computing and there is now a family of boards that can use used for automating simple to complicated tasks around the household. This could be something as simple as monitoring the moisture content of the soil in the flower bed to controlling the water supply so that they are provided just enough water during the summer months.
The maker's club is being run as a non-profit by local parents. At the moment they are looking at meeting weekly at 6pm on Tuesdays.
