Store celebrates 50th on the High Street where it started
In April Superdrug celebrated a milestone as it reached its 50th birthday year. After being founded in 1964, the first ever store opened on Putney High Street in 1966.
Putney remains a key part of Superdrug’s history and customers will still find a store on the High Street today. To celebrate 50 years of Superdrug the Managing Director Joey Wat, and Howard Goldstein, co-founder of the company unveiled a commemorative plaque outside the store.
Joey Wat, Superdrug Managing Director said: “It was a very proud moment to be able to stand on a high street today knowing that since the first store opened we have always had a place in the community. This store and this high street play a vital part in the heritage of Superdrug and the brand, we hope to have a presence here in another 50 years.”
Howard Goldstein founding brother of Superdrug described the day as "very moving and nostalgic."
He continued: "It was a great adventure my elder brothers and I embarked on all those years ago with one small store here in Putney. What has struck me as I have been involved with the Company in preparation for this anniversary, is that we prided ourselves on creating a great atmosphere to work in and had a great team with us. I have discovered that feeling still persists.”
Sixties' singer and actress Lulu made an appearance on Putney High Street in April, to help the local Superdrug store turn the clocks back to 1964.
