Staff were recognised for ‘going the extra mile’
The staff at Putney Library won a Staff Recognition Award at the Civic Awards Ceremony under the community engagement cate-gory. Staff were recognised for ‘going the extra mile’.
The nomination was for making Putney Library a central feature during the Olympic Road Race weekend, with a pop-up café, live TV cover-age and lots of displays, events and activities for all. This encouraged residents to come together and celebrate the Olympics.
On 6 November staff from all over the Council gathered together in the Civic Suite to celebrate the out-standing achievements of their colleagues.
Charlene Coleman at the library told PutneySW15.com:
"The staff at Putney Library were over the moon to win the award. We were very surprised. The pop up cafe was a great idea and so many people enjoyed it. It brought in new people to the library. We really hope we can do it again."
Live TV coverage of the cycle race |
Alison Williams the Principal Librarian for Putney & Roehampton said:
On Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July the Olympic cycle road races passed through Putney.
Putney Library celebrated with an open weekend featuring a pop-up café, live TV coverage, displays, exhibitions and children’s activities. There was a fantastic atmosphere in Putney as people flocked in to the town centre to support the cyclists and many came to watch the rest of the race on the two screens in the library showing live TV coverage. At one point there was around a hundred people in the library watching the race.
Alison continued:
"Children were able to join in storytimes and craft activities and learn circus skills with our unicyclist entertainer.
After watching the race people were able to enjoy coffee, tea and delicious cake in ‘Book Ends’ the library’s first ever pop-up café, which proved popular. A great weekend which showcased what the library can offer."
