Councillors will be asked this week (September 7) to approve an £85,000 package of measures to improve the street scene in Disraeli Road.

The road's junction with the High Street will be narrowed as part of the new lay-out. This will make it safer for pedestrians to cross while vehicles will find it harder to make an illegal left turn into the High Street.

The changes include taking out three parking bays to create the additional pavement space. The scheme has the backing of the town centre partnership which was fully involved throughout the design stages.

"This could be the first phase in a bigger programme of environmental improvements in the town centre," explained cabinet member for regeneration and transport Guy Senior.

"Putney is a prosperous centre but it has heavy traffic and cramped conditions for shoppers. We have already prepared further schemes which will aim to tackle some of these issues.

"We will be bidding for more funds next year from Transport for London to bring these projects forward."

The Disraeli Road works will be completed by March 2006.
