Laurie Green receives Contribution to the Community Award
The award is in recognition of Mr. Greens' outstanding services to the local community. Laurie is a retired Junior School Head Teacher and he moved into Hotham Road in 1966 with his wife Jean. They brought up two daughters there and they have certainly seen many changes over the past four decades. He has written books on education: · School Reports & other information for parents - Home & School Council Publication · Parents & teachers - Partners or Rivals - George Allen & Unwin · The above was also translated into Italian · Many articles in "Where "magazine on teacher parent co-operation. He was a member of Putney & Roehampton Organisation of Pensioners (P.R.O.P.) for the last twenty years and has recently retired as the Secretary through which he organised many events for local pensioners- both informative and recreational. He visited Tony Blair in 2002 and his colleagues Alistar Darling MP and Ann Caffey MP for discussions on the needs of pensioners and the Governments plans to help. More recently Laurie has hit local headlines by hitting out at the recently refurbished and franchised Post Office on the Upper Richmond Rd. As part of the refurbishment the seating in the Post Office for Pensioners to use whilst waiting to collect pensions etc. have been removed to make way for further merchandise displays. Tony Colman MP did not leave the house empty handed following his visit, Laurie gave him a letter to the Prime Minister drawing his attention to the situation at the Post Office as he believes that this does not fit in with Mr Blair's promise to help meet the needs of pensioners. "Tony will be quicker at delivering the letter than the Post Office!" jested Laurie. 22nd July 2003 Sign
