What's The Buzz In Putney?

Honey from SW15 rooftop bees up for prestigious award

Heavenly honey from bee hives on the rooftop of Nando's Upper Richmond Road restaurant in East Putney has been shortlisted for a prestigious Urban food award.

The awards are organised by the Mayor of London, Borough Market and London Food Link to recognise outstanding local producers and the Putney honey has been shortlisted among 8 finalists to win in a public vote.

The boxes of 60,000 bees are tended by expert beekeeper Mark Patterson from local bee keeping business 'Apicultural.'

The Putney honey has a fruity flavour thanks to the ample supply of Blackberry nectar along the nearby railways sidings and a tangy aftertaste from the Lime Trees which line the surrounding streets. It has a complex aroma and smooth runny texture which melts in the mouth.

The 2015 harvest was a bumper crop with over 70lbs produced per hive. The honey from the Upper Richmond Road Hives is used in the Nando's restaurant where it is fused with chillies to create a healthier choice sweet and spicy marinade to compliment chicken.

As part of their commitment to 'do the right thing' for the bees, Nando's staff have worked with the London beekeepers association to plant a Clapham Community Garden with bee friendly flowers to help 'feed the bees'.

You can vote for Putney honey by Apicultural to win in the Urban Food Awards by visiting the website. Voting ends at 12 noon on 8th July and everyone who votes stands the chance of winning a pair of invitations to the exclusive ‪#‎UrbanFoodAwards‬ awards evening at Borough Market on 21st September.
