Putney's Hidden Gems

Whilst the bridge is closed take time to discover new or old favourites

Putney Bridge is currently closed for essential repairs but Putney Town Centre is open for business and would welcome you to come and discover the beauty of Putney, the great range of retail shops, fine restaurants and pubs, relaxing cafes, excellent entertainment and of course the river bank.

Each day during the bridge closure works the Town Centre Manager will identify a gem of Putney which she recommends you visit.

Week 5 - Focus on Putney High Street

Monday 11th - Putney High Street
In Tudor times Putney had a number of houses belonging to City merchants and members of the court. In 1617 there were 12 great houses but this number had doubled by 1664. Villas and artisan's cottages were added from the 1820s but many of Putney's buildings are Victorian and Edwardian. The major High Street houses were demolished in 1868-87 for the construction of shops.

Today, a wide selection of retail shops line the High Street alongside popular bars and restaurants. Putney High Street normally acts as a main route into central London but with Putney Bridge being closed it is enjoying far lower levels of traffic, and is currently a very agreeable High Street to wander along. If you haven’t visited for a while come and check it out, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Tuesday 12th - Putney Pies

Putney Pies previously on Upper Richmond Road have recently opened at 2 Putney High Street, close to Putney Bridge. Having spent lots of time and money in a complete refurbishment they claim to offer the finest pies in the land. However, they offer more than just pies serving traditional British brunches, and lunch dishes all freshly prepared from the finest local ingredients. They also have a wide range of British beers and cocktails, and open late at the weekend.
They have a beautiful cellar vault which will hopefully open to the public in the near future, with outside space offering terraced seating overlooking the river.

Wednesday 13th - Eddie Katz
68 to 70 Putney High Street on the first floor is Eddie Catz Children’s Entertainment Centre. No two visits to an Eddie Catz are the same, but you're always guaranteed fun with the kids and the chance to catch an educational activity. Created by a local Mum and Dad, they have done it well, and made it much more than a traditional soft play facility.

•Pop in for a play with your child - whether it be a game of footie, a chase around the soft play structure or a boogie in the disco
•Attend a birthday party - or have one of your own!
•Enrol in one of the dozens of baby and toddler classes - a great way to meet other parents - and get a free play on the day
•Meet your friends for coffee, while the kids run around
•Bring your child to an afterschool club or class
•Drop off the kids at one of the themed workshops while you get your chores done
...or just sit back in our Café, relax with a cup of coffee and read a glossy magazine - or hook up to our free Wi Fi.
Open 7 days a week, makes entertaining children easy.
