Expect lane closures and traffic disruption for six weeks in the area
Gas distribution company SGN is to undertake major gas mains works in the Armoury Way area of Wandsworth Town. Work started this Saturday (4 August) and is planned to last six weeks.
SGN is replacing old gas mains and services with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued gas supply to the local area. A spokesperson said, "We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Wandsworth residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
"In consultation with Wandsworth Council and Transport for London, we will start work on Saturday 4 August and our project will last approximately six weeks."
The project in Armoury Way will be completed in two phases:
Phase one – approximately three weeks
On Saturday 4 August, work begins in Armoury Way (A3) between Putney Bridge Road and Dormay Street.
SGN need to temporarily close the two inside lanes of Armoury Way approaching the junction with Frogmore.
Traffic will be unable to enter Frogmore from Armoury Way during this phase. Access will be maintained to Frogmore via Putney Bridge Road and motorists will be able to travel in both directions along the road.
SGN will also need to temporarily close the two inside lanes of Wandsworth Plain approaching Armoury Way. All traffic turning into Armoury Way will be filtered through the outside lane only. The nearby bus stop on Wandsworth Plain will be suspended and the nearest alternative will be signposted.
Phase two – approximately three weeks
From Tuesday 28 August, engineers will move to the outside two lanes of Armoury Way at its junction with Wandsworth Plain.
SGN will reopen the inside two lanes of Armoury Way and reopen the Frogmore junction.
However, SGN will need to temporarily close the outside two lanes of Armoury Way (A3) approaching the junction.
The two inside lanes of Wandsworth Plain at the junction will remain closed and the suspension of the Wandsworth Plain bus stop will continue for the duration of phase two.
For the safety of pedestrians, SGN will close the pedestrian crossing and set up a safe alternative crossing point nearby.
Some parking bays may need to be suspended around the site.
SGN says its engineers will be working extended hours, seven days a week, between 7am and 7pm to minimise disruption.
