Fleur Anderson at COP28 this Friday

Fleur Anderson arrived at the COP28 climate crisis summit in Dubai this Friday (8 December).
The Putney MP joined representatives from over 100 countries to discuss tackling the climate crisis.
The event in Dubai is an attempt to identify global solutions for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees and encouraging all nations to develop their own climate plans to accelerate the green transition.
Both the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Labour leader MP attended the summit earlier as well as King Charles.
The Labour MP for Putney is joining the UN climate talk following her work on the UK Environment Bill, her campaign to ban plastic in wet wipes, founding of the Putney Environment Commission and work on various other environmental campaigns including opposition to any expansion of Heathrow Airport.
She said, “It is a real honour to join world leaders at COP28. Residents in Putney constantly raise the climate crisis as one of their greatest concerns – they want a world fit for the future, with energy security and the protection of our natural world. I started the Putney Environment Commission to channel the passion that local people have about our environment into a local action forum. We have to approach the climate crisis from all angles and start locally. I’m particularly determined to increase cycling and walking infrastructure in Putney, protect our green spaces like Wimbledon Park and am campaigning for only zero emissions buses to be allowed down our High Street.
“At COP28, Keir Starmer will be leading with a commitment to make the UK a green superpower – with a sprint for renewable energy development, providing quality jobs and security for decades to come. It is the kind of hopeful, ambitious and bold vision for the future of our country that I know residents in Putney will be extremely heartened to hear.”
The UK has made one of the fastest transitions to renewal energy of any developed nation and the current government has a commitment to Net Zero. Critics of the summit have suggested that COP 28 will not go far enough, but countries pledging to triple their renewable energy supply could enable the world to transfer away from fossil fuels by 2050.
Ms Anderson added, “It is sometimes tempting to feel helpless in the face of the enormous, global challenge presented by the climate crisis. But Keir Starmer has put it plainly – the UK must be a leading light in the fight to harness renewable energy and reach net zero. Importantly, we have a clear and costed vision for the UK economy. Labour will create Great British Energy, a new, publicly-owned clean energy company.
“We will harness Britain’s sun, win and wave energy to save £93 billion for UK households, deliver one hundred per cent clean power by 2030, creating thousands of good local jobs, delivering energy security and cutting energy bills in the process. I know some people are critical of politicians flying to Dubai to attend COP28, but having weighed up the benefits of having our voice on the global stage heard along with 200 other countries is critical. I look forward to updating constituents on the outcomes of the summit.”
The United Nations released a statement on the summit, saying, “With the most important details of the Paris Climate Change Agreement negotiated and agreed over the last few years, COP28 is all about implementing the Agreement and ramping up ambition and action. We are in a decisive decade for climate action.
“The latest science from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates that greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut 43% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. This is critical to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century and avoid the worst impacts of climate change, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and rainfall. “
