Fleur Anderson MP with volunteers at Wandsworth Foodbank
August 8, 2023
Over half a tonne of foodbank donations has been made as part of the Putney Gives campaign.
Launched by local MP Fleur Anderson, the food and other products given were being collected for Wandsworth Foodbank and local organisations that support households across Putney, Roehampton and Southfields.
Items donated came from St Mary’s Church, St Michael’s Church, St Barnabas Church, Holy Trinity Church, St Paul’s Church, Ashcroft Academy, Fazl Mosque and Wimbledon Synagogue.
Ms Anderson MP said “I was utterly blown away by the size of the donations from the organisations that got involved with Putney Gives – it is amazing that we managed to collect over half a tonne of essential everyday items. A huge thanks to the volunteers at Wandsworth Foodbank who came down to sort everything, and a massive thank you to the churches, schools, the local synagogue and the local mosque, who all drove down enormous car loads of donations.”
The campaign launch came on the same day that the Trussell Trust announced that more food parcels had been handed out in the year to March in the UK than ever before. In Wandsworth alone , 10,052 food parcels were distributed in the borough, up from 9680 the year before.
The charity End Child Poverty estimates that 29.4% of children in Putney currently live in poverty.
The Putney MP added, “It should go without saying that families should not have to rely on the generosity of their community for basic necessities like food and nappies. The idea that nearly 30% of children in Putney living in poverty is horrifying. The cost of living crisis has impacted all households across Putney, Southfields, Roehampton and Wandsworth Town, including those who have never struggled financially before. “
