Fleur Anderson has been chosen by the Putney electorate for a second term as the local MP at the General Election this Thursday (4 July).

The Labour candidate, who was the only one to take a seat from the Tories in 2019, increased her vote share to 49% up by 4.7 percentage points and now has a five-figure majority.

The Conservative candidate Lee Roberts finished second with just over 10,000 votes in a poll that saw a 13 percentage point swing away from his party.

The Liberal Democrats had a disappointing night gaining 12.1% of votes cast but the Green’s Fergal McEntee saw a significant increase from a low base. Peter Hunter for Reform was given 6.3% of the votes cast.

The result suggests that the constituency has been transformed into a safe Labour seat since Brexit as it has one of the highest proportions of Remain voters in the UK. Previous the seat had historically changed hands between Labour and the Conservatives with Justine Greening having held the seat in 2017.

Turnout was reduced significantly from the 2019 election at 59% down from 77% which allowed Ms Anderson to increase her vote share and majority despite receiving fewer votes than in 2019.

Ms Anderson said after the declaration, “It is the honour of my life to be re-elected MP for Putney. Thank you to all 10,941 of Putney residents voted to put their trust in me. My campaign was fought on both asking residents to judge me on my local record and what I have delivered for our community in Putney, as well as showing that change is possible with a Labour Party in Government. We have a plan for our country's future. I am utterly humbled and delighted to get to work.

“What has struck me as I have been on Putney doorsteps across in my time since my election in 2019 is the passion that local people have for our area, and the care that neighbours take of one another. Putney residents care deeply about our key local issues – whether it’s crime, the congestion caused by Hammersmith Bridge, air pollution, NHS waitlists – and want practical solutions and an MP who will work hard to deliver for them. I am committed to repaying their trust over the next 4 years and delivering change on the things that matter most to us.”

Labour also comfortably held on to the two other seats in the borough of Wandsworth, Battersea and Tooting.
