Labour closer to taking Putney than their most optimistic expectations
|
The constituency of Putney has been held for the Conservatives by Justine Greening who won 44.1% of the vote, the Conservative party share was down by 9.7%.This morning Justine told PutneySW15: "“I’m really honoured to be able to continue to represent our local community and I’ll keep doing my best to work on the issues that matter to us.” However the result was way below expectation in what was a poor night for her party particularly in London.
Her majority of over 10,000 from the 2015 election was reduced to just 1,554 or 3.3%
Justine Greening placed her vote on Thursday
Dr Neeraj Patil increased Labour votes by 10.8 percentage points and Ryan Mercer saw a 5.3% rise in the Liberal Democrat vote. The two candidates combined vote would have defeated Ms Greening which is likely to cause a mixed response from those who had advocated a 'progressive alliance' in the constituency.
71.7% of eligible voters turned out in comparison with 67.2% in 2015.
Tooting was the first result in the borough of Wandsworth with Labour's Rosena Allin-Khan with 59.% of the votes and increase of 12.4%. The biggest surprise in the area was the result for Battersea in which Conservative Jane Ellison lost to Labour's Marsha de Cordova.
