A new safety scheme could see security cameras erected on a Putney footbridge. The crossing runs alongside the rail bridge linking Deodar Road to Putney Bridge station.

The bridge has a history of crime problems and many residents say they feel unsafe walking across it at any time, day or night.

The bridge is owned by London Underground and joins two boroughs - Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham.

Wandsworth Council is now consulting locally on plans to install three sets of cameras on the bridge. Most of the £80,000 costs would be met by Transport for London. The cameras would be monitored from the council's CCTV control room.

Cabinet member for Environment and Public Services Kathy Tracey said:

"Wandsworth has taken the lead in bringing all the relevant parties together including the bridge's owners and the police from both sides of the river. We are getting a great response to the consultation but there is still time for others to have their say. The more support we get, the stronger our case becomes."
