Security guard suffers racist attack


Appeal for witnesses to incident on Danebury Avenue

Wandsworth police are appealing for witnesses and information following the assault of a 33-year-old man outside the Co-operative retail store on Danebury Avenue, Putney at approximately 20.45hrs on Saturday, 10 June 2006.

At approximately 20.30hrs that evening, the victim (a security guard at the store) was patrolling the store when he was confronted by the suspect and his girlfriend. The suspect responded aggressively and made a racial slur towards the victim, before leaving the store in an unknown direction. Police were not called.

Fifteen minutes later (approx 20.45hrs) the male suspect returned and was met by the victim at
the store doors. The suspect punched the victim 5 or 6 times round the neck and shoulder. The victim attempted to cover himself from the assault and made no attempt to fight back. The suspect left in an unknown direction.

DC John Williams, the investigating officer, said, “The suspect is described as a white man in his late twenties, around 5’8” with a shaven head. He wore an England vest and black tracksuit bottoms. I urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in our inquiries.”

The victim did not need medical aid, but suffered some cuts and bruises. No arrests have been made and enquiries continue - Police are treating it as racially aggravated.
