Putney Man Jailed for Armed Robbery

Dennis Lukonge caught thanks to intervention of passers-by

A Putney man was given an indeterminate sentence following his part in an armed robbery. He was caught thanks to the intervention of two passers-by who gave chase to him after the robbery despite the fact that he was carrying a gun.

Dennis Lukonge (pictured below), 20, of Henry Jackson Road, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (8 July) where he pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear.

Lukonge also admitted more than 100 other offences he'd committed in the Metropolitan Police area which were taken into account. He was given an indeterminate prison sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of four years.

On Wednesday, 16 March, Lukonge, and an accomplice, entered Coral bookmakers, on High Street, Ewell, threatening staff and customers with a gun demanding money. The employees handed over a small amount of money and Lukonge and the other suspect fled on foot.

A chase ensued as two witnesses saw Lukonge running away and they managed to retrieve the un-loaded weapon.

Detective Sergeant Eddie Poole said, 'At the time of the robbery, two very brave passers-by gave chase after Lukonge and his accomplice. As a result of their quick-thinking and heroics we were able to secure vital forensic evidence which helped our investigation. I have personally thanked these two community-spirited residents who were also awarded a Judge's Commendation for their bravery.'

The police have yet to identify his accomplice and have appealed to anyone who can provide his name to come forward.
