LISTER ON PUTNEY

Edward Lister is the Leader of Wandsworth Council and a member for Putney's Thamesfield ward.

The dream of an easy link between Putney's tube and mainline stations is one many of us share.

That's why I was interested in the latest comments on putneysw15.com's forum page.

On the face of it a separate entrance to the mainline station from the bridge at Oxford Road would halve the walk to East Putney. It wouldn't quite add up to a fully-fledged transport interchange but it would certainly make life simpler for people switching lines at this point.

It would also reduce some of the pavement congestion on the mainline station's Putney High Street frontage.

There was a scheme two or three years ago which Railtrack rejected. The proposal however has not gone away and the council is continuing to press for a solution.

Having completed the successful refurbishment of Putney leisure centre the council is now in discussions with local people on improvements to the Roehampton recreation centre.

The Laverstoke Gardens facilities are wedged onto a narrow site but there is space alongside that could accommodate a fitness centre and perhaps an indoor children's play area.

We have put up some drawings up at the centre showing what we think is possible - if you are one of the 20,000 people a year who use the facilities why not have a look at the plans on your next visit - and let us know what you think.

Lots of activity on Putney Embankment this week with the sea cadets set to move back into their newly refurbished premises at Ashlone Wharf.

It's difficult to appreciate from the outside the sheer scale of the changes that have gone on inside.

The result is a terrific improvement in the accommodation for both the sea cadets and the youth river club who will move in after the summer.

By the time the final bills have been paid the scheme will have cost around £400,000 - this represents a substantial investment by the council in river-based facilities for the borough's young people.
