Parish vicar appointed Canon Chancellor of St Paul's
Giles Fraser has been appointed Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral. Giles will leave the Parish of Putney in July to service in the Cathedral over the river in the Diocese of London.
As Canon Chancellor, Giles will have responsibility for The St Paul's Institute, an organization operating out of the Cathedral which designs and instigates educational programmes which seek to promote the Public face of Theology and encourage interaction between Theology and the Community. The Institute works particularly with the City of London in the areas of economics and ethics.
In September last year Dr Fraser caused controversey by inviting banned bishop Gene Robinson to St Marys' Church. Earlier in 2008 Dr Fraser said gay marriage is not culture wars or church politics, but about one person loving another. On BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day he said: "It's not as if there's so much real love in the world that we can afford to be dismissive of what little we do find."He is a regular on Radio 4's Today programme and a Guardian columnist.
Giles and Sally and expanding family have been at St Mary's Putney for 9 years he having been made Vicar in 2000. His last Sunday will be on July 19th, at the 10.00am service he will celebrate the Eucharist and preach for the last time as Vicar of St Mary's Church. A party will be held in the Church on Friday July 17th at 7.30pm to wish Giles, Sally, Alice, Isabella and Felix a fond farewell.
