Wandsworth Hygiene Bank Gets Set for Hygiene Week

There is a big week ahead for Hygiene Bank Wandsworth as 2-8 October is National Hygiene Week.
The Hygiene Bank Wandsworth (HBW) is a volunteer-run project that makes up a network of local Hygiene Banks across England and Wales. It supports Wandsworth residents who experience hygiene poverty, meaning they struggle to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted. The reality of low income is that it restricts people’s options, leaving people caught between being able to heat our homes, pay the rent, eat or be clean. Hygiene poverty can be shaming, humiliating and excluding and can result in social isolation. It can lead to a lack of confidence and can negatively affect good health and mental well-being which can impact early childhood development, learning, employability and social interaction.
This is why the local group runs a donation point in Boots at 109 Putney High Street. It is one of 6 collection sites across the borough, where the public can donate their unused, unopened and in-date personal care and household cleaning essentials. For example, shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, dental care, period products, baby products (nappies, baby wipes, baby shampoo, etc), laundry detergent and toilet cleaner. The team of volunteers then sort and distribute the products to local charities that work with those who need them (including a baby bank and a charity supporting those experiencing homelessness).
National Hygiene week is the charity’s call to encourage individuals, families, schools, corporates and brands to get involved in the fight against hygiene poverty. It's an opportunity to come together to make a difference within our local communities.
