Cameron Norrie, who lives in a flat in Putney, faces what could be the biggest game of his life this Saturday (3 July) when he takes on Roger Federer in the third round of the Men’s Singles at Wimbledon.
25-year-old Cameron, who is the British number two and also played regularly at the Roehampton Club, won through earlier this week with a straight-sets win over Australian, Alex Bolt. It is the first time he has been this far in the competition.
Back in 2018 he joked during the US Open that he needed to progress in the tournament to be able to afford to live in SW15.
His opponent, the 39-year-old Swiss Legend is looking forward to the clash. When questioned about the game at a post-match press conference he said, "I hope the crowd gets into it. I understand if they cheer for him and if it is for me it is because of the last 20 years and all the big wins I've had here.
"Cam is a good guy, he's had a wonderful year and played great at Queen's, backing that up here."
"But enough now - he needs to go out! I need to go through."
South-Africa born Cameron has been in the form of his life so far this year and has been one of the leading players on the ATP Tour and is currently ranked 34 in the world meaning he was seeded for Wimbledon. Before Federer’s second round match with the Frenchman Richard Gasquet, he joked that he was supporting him over the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
He stills gives himself a chance though saying, "If there is a time to play Roger, I guess now is the best - but he is still a decent player!"
Federer has had problems with his knee and there were concerns about his fitness coming into the tournament though he appears to be getting stronger as he plays more matches.
With Dan Evans and Sir Andy Murray also getting through this is the best showing by British men at this stage of the tournament since 1999.
