A 14 bus at the stop on Putney Heath
February 7, 2025
Campaigners are celebrating after Transport for London (TfL) agreed to trial a reopening of the bus stop on Putney Heath.
For the last few months local residents and councillors in Roehampton, along with Putney MP Fleur Anderson and Wandsworth Cabinet Member for Transport Jenny Yates have been lobbying for passengers to be allowed to get off the bus at the stand there.
Elderly residents, disabled passengers, and schoolchildren in Roehampton have been forced to walk further due to being required to disembark at Lytton Grove and Tibbett’s Corner.
The trial reopening runs from 8 February to 8 March, with hopes for full reinstatement. Measures are being taken by TfL and the bus operating companies to better manage the bus stand to ensure passenger safety.
Fleur Anderson MP said,"I was really concerned when people contacted me about their experiences and I worked with Councillor Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, to raise this with TfL and the bus operators. They were willing to work together and trial the change, and we will continue pushing to make this permanent so that residents are not left stranded again.
“Thank you to everyone who wrote in to us about this issue. The testimonies of people stranded after 10 hour work days, those with mobility impairment having to call family to collect them and young children on their way home from school really convinced TfL to reopen the stand.”
Efforts continue locally to improve bus services more generally by Ms Anderson and local councillors. The MP, together with Cllr Yates, has launched the Putney and Roehampton Bus Taskforce, bringing together TfL, Wandsworth Council, bus operators, and utility companies. The Taskforce has already secured commitments from UKPN and SGN to minimise emergency roadworks in Putney.
Wandsworth Council has partnered with the University of Roehampton to open its shuttle bus for public use, now free during term time, with nearly 80,000 journeys taken in recent months.
The Council also launched the Roehampton Transport Club Minibus, providing free door-to-door transport for those less able to use public transport.
Ms Anderson added,"We’ve already seen some improvements made by the Taskforce but we know Roehampton’s bus services still need serious improvements. The Bus Taskforce is a major step forward, and I hope to report good news soon on bus performance."
