26 year old Goncalo Lobo was last seen in the early hours of Saturday floating unconscious near Putney Bridge. There have been four searches of the river, but police have found no trace of him, detectives in Wandsworth have today opened a missing person inquiry but hold little hope of finding him alive.
However a body has been recovered today by the Marine Support Unit after a member of the public reported seeing a possible body under Vauxhall Bridge - Police are currently trying to establish if this is the body of Goncalo Lobo.
Mr Lobo had just finished his shift as a barman at the B@1 bar in Putney High Street and was reported as being "in a good mood" having been praised by his manager. Friends and family said it was a mystery why Mr Lobo, originally from Lisbon , should have ended up in the water.
Childhood friend José Fontes, 24, told The London Standard:
"Apparently he and a colleague wanted to get a beer after work and were trying to catch a bus to Chiswick. But the police said Goncalo had not been drinking. Anyone who knows what a happy person he is would say suicide is out of the question. There was no clue anything was wrong. Goncalo has a very uplifting personality, he is somebody who everyone liked and trusted."
Mr Lobo was much traveled having in lived in Singapore and studied art and design at a university in Australia before moving to London a year ago. According to Mr Fontes, Mr Lobo "doted" on his 14-month-old daughter Santana, who lives with her mother in Portugal.
Mr Lobo's colleague who was with him it is reported in the London Standard 'thought to have told police Mr Lobo was leaning over the bridge before "pretending" to jump to a hidden ledge. Seconds later he was seen floating with his eyes closed.'
