Over one hundred attend two hour tour through local streets

Over 100 cyclists attended the Big Putney Bike Ride last weekend. They were joined by broadcaster Jeremy Vine, the former Mayor of Wandsworth, councillors and local MP Fleur Anderson.

The Putney MP had helped organise the two hour ride through local streets along with the Wandsworth Council cycle team and Wandsworth cycling campaign. The aim of the event was to promote the importance of active travel and raises awareness around increasing the safety and ease with which everyone can cycle on local streets in a fun way.

It was hoping to provide an opportunity to encourage all cyclists, particularly families and those who may feel less confident cycling on roads, to get on two wheels and explore the local area, meet other cyclists and build confidence.

Ms Anderson said, “I was blown away by the turnout at the Big Putney Bike Ride this year. It is a real delight to see so many local people – from babies in bike seats to pensioners - out on their bikes. I have been working hard to improve active travel options locally – making it safer and easier to walk, wheel and cycle. Cycling is cheap, healthy and enjoyable, and we must continue to work towards improving safety so that far more people feel confident in using a bike more often.

Jeremy Vine, tweeted, “Thanks to Fleur Anderson MP for organising such a fun ride yesterday, along with London Cycling Campaign marshals… just a great way to see this corner of South West London!”

Wandsworth Council has committed to investing in active travel, with a range of schemes including more cycle storage, new routes and e-cargo bike rental to make cycling easier, safer and more accessible.

 

Wandsworth Cycling Champion and local Councillor Jack Mayorcas also attended the event, tweeting, “Brilliant morning Fleur Anderson’s (hopefully now annual) family bike ride around Putney. Thanks to Wandsworth Cycling for the marshalling and Wandsworth Council staff who attended also. Already looking forward to next year!”
