Beverly Brook - a thriving "eco-system"
Once
a lifeless stream but now well and truly on the road to recovery
When local
volunteers checked out the species found in Beverly Brook a couple of
years ago they were impressed to find that what was once a lifeless stream
had many new species including somewhat surprisingly a large goldfish!
This
years check up has found healthy and more appropriate specimens of chubb,
roach & dace all of which is good news to the Enviroment Agency. Beverly
Brook which joins the Thames at Putney following its journey through Richmond
Park and Wimbledon Common, was badly affected by poorly treated effluent
from the old Worcester Park Sewage Works. Following the replacement of
the sewage treatment works with Hogsmill Water Treatment plant under five
years ago the water quality has improved thanks to the modern methods
of water improvement.
The vice chair of the Wimbledon and Putney Common Conservators, Tony Drakeford,
said: "A management plan is underway to further enhance the brook environmentally
and visually, so with luck and a little time we may once again watch brown
trout rising to the fly on this ancient waterway."
