Since the second half of the 19th century, Putney has been one of the most significant centres for rowing in the United Kingdom. More than twenty rowing clubs are based on the Thames at Putney Embankment and produced a plethora of Olympic medallists.

The first race to kick off March is the Women’s Eight Head of the River Race on the 10th March at 09:45 am. It has around 2,880 women racing and 320 crews taking part. It is the only race in the UK where novices can compete in the same race as Olympic champions and as such attracts a wide range of rowers from clubs and universities. We will have a free craft activity for children to make rowing themed artwork alongside Putney Market in Church Square.

The Head of the River Race (Mens) follows on Sunday 11th March at 10:15 am. Over 400 crews of eights take part, making it one of the highest participation events in London.
On the 12th March at 13:00 pm the Schools’ Head of the River Race will take place. The race is one of the largest races for students in full time education.

All three races finish at Putney Embankment making it a fantastic viewing point to see the final excitement as they race for the line.

Onto the most well-known rowing race, the University Boat Race on Saturday 24th March. The men and women from Oxford University and Cambridge University compete in two separate races; the first at 16:31 and the second at 17:31. This day is very busy so arrive early to get the best viewing spots. On Boat Race Day, Wandsworth Radio take over Church Square and compere an afternoon of live entertainment with super bands and exceptional dancers. We will also have street food and outside bars. Come along and enjoy the atmosphere. The regular Putney Market will be located on the Church forecourt. Would you like to see the rowers close up? then the best place to watch is Putney Wharf where you can see the rowers warming up before the race.
