Celebrate the start of spring and come along and cheer on the teams along the River Thames finishing on Putney Embankment and there are various weekends with races.

Don’t forget to pack your Pimm’s and arrive early to grab a good viewing spot!

Since the second half of the 19th century, Putney has been one of the most significant centres for rowing in the United Kingdom. More than twenty rowing clubs are based on the Thames at Putney Embankment, among the largest are London Rowing Club, Thames Rowing Club, Imperial College Boat Club and Vesta Rowing Club. The Putney clubs have produced a plethora of Olympic medallists and Henley winners.

The historic Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, first contested in 1829 in Henley-on-Thames, has had Putney as its starting point since 1845. Since 1856 it has been an annual event, beginning at the University Stone, just upstream from Putney Bridge.

The first Women’s Boat Race took place outside of London in 1927. This remained the same until history was made in 2015 when both the Men’s and Women’s Races took place on the Tideway on the same day.

Several other important rowing races over the Championship Course also either start or finish at the stone, notably the Head of the River Race series starting at Chiswick and finishing at Putney Bridge. Each day sees over 300 boats each manned by eight people plus a cox from round the country competing against each other.

Various businesses along the Lower Richmond Road have put together soem especial offers for visitors and residents visting the emabnakment for the month of March.
