The petition reads as follows:

We the undersigned request the establishment of a direct link from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith via Barnes, preferably by an extension to the 22 bus route.

This would be of benefit because:

  • Barnes is only one mile away but as there is no direct transport link, people are forced to use cars. This adds to the traffic and parking congestion, which is a major problem in South West London.
  • Many children from West Putney attend schools in Hammersmith including St. Paul's Boys and Girls Schools, Godolphin, Latymer Upper & Lower Schools, Sacred Heart, Colet Court and Bute House. At present many of them are driven, as parents are understandably reluctant to allow their children to walk across the common alone, especially in the winter months. This again adds to traffic congestion.
  • Many commuters from West Putney would benefit from access to the Piccadilly Line Tube and a better link Heathrow Airport.
  • Residents of Putney would also benefit from easier access to the shopping facilities in Hammersmith.
  • The valuable new resource of the Wildfowl and Wetland Centre has no link with Putney so that all visitors by tube have to approach from Hammersmith. This lack of choice may force more visitors into using their cars thus causing more pollution and congestion.
