Permanent memorial of wedding day for Hammersmith

Hammersmith is set to have a permanent memorial of the Royal Wedding in the shape of a larger than life statue of the happy couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, in the centre of Lyric Square.

Italian sculptress Lola Fripo is flying in from Milan to create the 10 foot high statue in a studio within the Lyric Theatre.

The sculptress, an ardent royalist whose other work has included a nude statue of Prince Charles, describes her design as "totalmente romantico".

She hopes to complete her work the day before the wedding, which takes place at Westminster Abbey on April 29.

The statue will then be rolled out and installed on a gold plinth in a vacant space next to the square's fountains.

It will be the centrepiece of the Lyric Square's public wedding celebrations, and will remain in place as a souvenir of the royal occasion.

Lola expects it to become one of Hammersmith's major attractions. "When the public see my statue it will be amore a prima vista," she predicts.
