Thank you Phillipa Bond

In a thread about dishwashers in 11/08, Phillipa wrote "BTW I would never leave a dishwasher running while I'm out and certainly not after we've gone to bed at night. Although mine did not catch fire when something went wrong, it overheated and the rollers on the lower basket are now no longer round.  Luckily I heard the strange sound it was making and so was able to turn it off in time."There have been several serious fires in my road, so Phillipa's warning resonated with me and I started turning off our ancient dishwasher when I left the house or went to bed. There's been a lot of eye-rolling from my partner until last week when - voila! - the dishwasher blew up. Amid the foul smoke he vowed to never doubt me again. I think he thinks I'm psychic.Thank you Phillipa.

Years ago I had a washer/dryer that caught fire one Monday afternoon. Fortunately I was at home and was able to unplug the machine and douse the flames before they did any damage. I would never under any circumstances leave a machine running when I was not there to keep an eye on it.

The same thing happened to me with a washing machine.A Big Bang and lots of smoke. Fortunately I was there to unplug and dowse. I never leave any machines switched on during the night or when going out.

I certainly sit up and pay attention whenever Phillipa has something to write about. Her contributions add to the sum total of my knowledge, and well-being. She needs to be encouraged, not criticised. Hopefully this will encourage others of equal knowledge and sincerity to speak up. But where someone sincerely disagrees with what she has to say please do so constructively as this adds to the value of your arguement and is much easier to more fully understand.

Appliances were used more during the night by those that had storage heaters as it was cheaper rate overnight so people would leave things on timers to come on during the night, think more of us now have gas central heating.
